Native to Cape Town's west coast, this plant thrives in a Mediterranean-like climate with wet winters and dry summers. It grows in sandy flats and rocky coastal outcrops. Its branches end in solitary yellow-green flowers, surrounded by 5-7 small bracts that form a cup-like shape. Flowers eventually harden into seeds. The plant isn't spiny but prickly from old peduncles. Some may cluster or fan out. Its sweet fruits are edible.
