Native to Mexico, this cactus is found in the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas, at elevations of 100-1900 meters. It thrives in the dry, hot climate of the Chihuahuan Desert outskirts, relying on occasional flash floods for water. Growing in limestone-derived gypsum silt plains and hills, it stays low to the ground, making it hard to spot, except when its diurnal pink-violet flowers (2.5-5 cm wide) bloom for 3-4 days. This flat geophyte cactus has a large taproot for water and energy storage, often shrinking above ground while the root remains alive. Its unique tubercle patterns and flat shape make it especially intriguing.
