Ariocarpus fissuratus: The living rock cactus

I nearly stepped on several of our forever favorite cacti, Ariocarpus fissuratus aka living rock cactus, before realizing they were scattered all around us on an exposed limestone outcrop. Flattened against the earth and perfectly camouflaged among the stone, they stealthily disappear into the landscape. Most of the plant lives hidden underground in a thick taproot, growing slowly for decades before sending up a brief flash of pink-purple flowers in fall. During times of drought, the visible plant can actually shrink down into the ground.

Living rock cactus in Big Bend National Park

These were all photographed in Big Bend National Park, often in plain sight just off the road, where 99.9% of visitors pass without even knowing they exist. Unfortunately, the species is highly prized by collectors and threatened in the wild by habitat loss and illegal collecting. It’s extremely slow growing tendencies add to its allure for collectors who impatiently don’t want to wait 20 years to have a decent sized specimen.

Cactus poaching in West Texas

PLEASE SEE FINAL 2 SLIDES — Taken in Marfa, Texas, the day after seeing these plants in habitat. I spotted the pots from the road and suspected they held poached plants, and my gut instinct was right. Likely 30–40 years old based on size, SELLING FOR $10! That 100% organic substrate alone will likely seal their fate of a slow rotting death and unfortunately, this sight is not uncommon in the region. A wild-collected plant can often be identified by its coloring, corking, and overall rougher appearance, and we suggest always doing your research on a seller before purchasing plants, especially online, so you don’t support these trash humans.
